Summary

National Book Award winner Jacqueline Woodson and two-time Pura Belpre Illustrator Award winner Rafael Lopez have teamed up to create a poignant, yet heartening book about finding courage to connect, even when you feel scared and alone。

There will be times when you walk into a room
and no one there is quite like you。

There are many reasons to feel different。 Maybe it's how you look or talk, or where you're from; maybe it's what you eat, or something just as random。 It's not easy to take those first steps into a place where nobody really knows you yet, but somehow you do it。

Jacqueline Woodson's lyrical text and Rafael Lopez's dazzling art reminds us that we all feel like outsiders sometimes-and how brave it is that we go forth anyway。 And that sometimes, when we reach out and begin to share our stories, others will be happy to meet us halfway。

Jacqueline Woodson is the 2018-2019 National Ambassador for Young People's Literature。

This lovely book touches on so many important themes about growing up and feeling different, but it never pushes or preaches。 The message is that we are all a little different, but we experience the same emotions and feelings growing up。

Jacqueline Woodson is becoming a kidlit staple for a reason。 She is great at communicating a lot with very little, where Lopez's art seems to never stop moving。 Jacqueline Woodson is becoming a kidlit staple for a reason。 She is great at communicating a lot with very little, where Lopez's art seems to never stop moving。 。。。more

This is a book you would read if you live in a very diverse city like New York City。 It doesn't really work with other large cities in the country were most people of a specific race only go to school with each other。 Personally, I didn't find it relatable, I found there to be too much wording, and it's not something I would read to my future children。 This is a book you would read if you live in a very diverse city like New York City。 It doesn't really work with other large cities in the country were most people of a specific race only go to school with each other。 Personally, I didn't find it relatable, I found there to be too much wording, and it's not something I would read to my future children。 。。。more

A great book that encourages children to take the first step towards others even when they feel scared and different in some way。 Maybe if you take that step and try to connect there are people and other kids that will meet you halfway。Easy read and one that you should read with your kids。

This is a book about moving to a new school or a new situation where no one looks like you。 This book is about giving students the courage to overcome and make new friends。

Thank you, @baeckensbooks, for the review copy!'The Day You Begin' is a picture book about the ways one can feel different。 The book was written by Jacqueline Woodson, illustrated by Rafael López and translated to Dutch by Edward van de Vendel。It's a beautiful picture book that resolves around diversity。 Everyone can feel different in one way or another。 Logically, it starts with the usual examples of this。 A great way to discuss diversity in a any way。 That's what makes you unique。 Awesome! Dat krijg je echter pas op het einde mee, dat is wel een beetje spijtig。Mijn rating: 4 op 5 sterren 。。。more

This picture book is beautifully illustrated and poetically written。 It focuses a lot on the ways kids can feel different from others, especially in a new school (different language or name when they moved from another country, lunch that others think is weird, not being rich enough to take cool vacations when others do, not being good at the sports and games that others are)。 Some reviewers felt that this was overly negative, but I suspect that this book will resonate the most with people/kids This picture book is beautifully illustrated and poetically written。 It focuses a lot on the ways kids can feel different from others, especially in a new school (different language or name when they moved from another country, lunch that others think is weird, not being rich enough to take cool vacations when others do, not being good at the sports and games that others are)。 Some reviewers felt that this was overly negative, but I suspect that this book will resonate the most with people/kids who’ve had that experience of feeling different, as a mirror to their experience, basically showing that you aren’t alone in feeling alone。 Especially for kids of color who have felt marginalized in mostly white environments。 I loved it。 。。。more

Everyone is just a little different。 We have different experiences, different families, different languages, and taste in food。 This book helps highlight the importance of finding commonalities to build friendships with all。

Good introduction to the beginning of the school year。 Culturally diverse。 Pictures and symbolism

This book is a fantastic representation for readers who will find themselves affected by the intersections of race and class。 In "The Day You Begin," characters repeatedly walk into rooms that are not welcoming to them and in which they feel like an outsider。 What I love about this book is how the author takes those instances of loneliness and takes the unique qualities of those children which set them apart and writes in a way that shows how beautiful those features are。 The author describes on This book is a fantastic representation for readers who will find themselves affected by the intersections of race and class。 In "The Day You Begin," characters repeatedly walk into rooms that are not welcoming to them and in which they feel like an outsider。 What I love about this book is how the author takes those instances of loneliness and takes the unique qualities of those children which set them apart and writes in a way that shows how beautiful those features are。 The author describes one boy's Venezuelan accent as sounding like "flowers blooming。" I would love to see more books like this which celebrate the experiences of immigrant and impoverished children。 。。。more

Another cute story。 Lesson here is that we are all different and we should not only accept those differences about ourselves, but be proud about them too。

Beautiful book about beginning school & accepting what makes you and your classmates each different and unique。 Love the diversity and bright illustrations!

A Timeless Message5 stars for the picture book with the timeless message that connection may be found on the other side of our vulnerability, if only we are brave enough to open our hearts。

Great for the classroom This is a great first day of school book for elementary school students! I highly recommend it! Great at showing diversity。

What a delightful, beautiful picture book。 Better for 5-7 year olds, I think。 My 6 1/2 year and I read it and she was able to grasp the feelings of being scared and lonely to try new things。 The illustrations were absolutely gorgeous and the words were quite poetic。

No One is Alone! While you may feel misunderstood for the way you walk, talk, eat, dress or behave, you are unique and you are not alone! The heartfelt situations of economic strain, race, physical inabilities for whatever reason and not chosen for teams, that are faced by kids on a daily basis are combated with the beautiful lyrical dialogue of award-winning author Jaqueline Woodson, accompanied by the lush and vibrant and emotional depth of award-winning illustrator Rafael Lopez。 All it takes No One is Alone! First and foremost, I loved this book。 This book shows all the differences we have and notice about ourselves and others。 We may look different or sound different or eat different foods or have different abilities。 We may not know anyone who looks or sounds or feels just like us。 But the day you begin to share your own stories, you realize that the world feels a little more familiar and others are a little bit more like you。 I think a lot of people try to gloss over our differences and pretend t First and foremost, I loved this book。 This book shows all the differences we have and notice about ourselves and others。 We may look different or sound different or eat different foods or have different abilities。 We may not know anyone who looks or sounds or feels just like us。 But the day you begin to share your own stories, you realize that the world feels a little more familiar and others are a little bit more like you。 I think a lot of people try to gloss over our differences and pretend they don't exist because they believe that harmony exists where there is no variation or room for discontent。 But when we do that we erase the beauty that is everyone as an individual。 we all have different backgrounds and stories。 Our differences make us unique, but they also help to pull us together。 You can meet someone who doesn't seem like you whatsoever, but when you open yourself up and put yourself out there, the world seems a little more familiar, a little morecomfortable。 As always, a wonderful book by Woodson that I will refer back to for a while。 I love the brightness and warmth of the illustrations that match the brightness of every individual mentioned。 。。。more

I really enjoyed the art of this book, and how it covers the very real fears of starting something new。 It really was enjoyable。

Love it! I love the self esteem this book promotes to young readers! The world can often times feel very lonely, but it doesn’t have to be that way。 We can all make a little more room for one another。

This is a book about feeling a little different, but being brave to step out anyway。 It is our differences that make us unique。 There are people from many different walks of life, and all are equally valuable。 This is a great read for new citizens or children of new migrants who carry the traits of their homeland。 It is also a great read for those Canadian born and those born into privilege, to open their minds to the diversity of our world。 Be brave to be you。 Share your stories and perspective This is a book about feeling a little different, but being brave to step out anyway。 It is our differences that make us unique。 There are people from many different walks of life, and all are equally valuable。 This is a great read for new citizens or children of new migrants who carry the traits of their homeland。 It is also a great read for those Canadian born and those born into privilege, to open their minds to the diversity of our world。 Be brave to be you。 Share your stories and perspectives, “and all at once, in a room where no one else is quite like you, the world opens itself up a little wider to make some space for you。 This is the day you begin。” 。。。more

Beautiful artwork。 Lovely and important theme of inclusion, however, the text was a bit wordy and overly poetic in a way that didn't work well for my son。 Beautiful artwork。 Lovely and important theme of inclusion, however, the text was a bit wordy and overly poetic in a way that didn't work well for my son。 。。。more
